There have been many suggested ways to treat depression that have been offered throughout history, and some of the most popular ones today are through the use of medication and through the use of therapy. Sometimes these are combined. These are not the only options, though, and a lot of people are turning toward magnetic therapy for treatment of their depression problems. For the millions of people who have depression and similar conditions such as anxiety disorders and bipolar disorders, any kind of therapy that will help them is often tried. Magnetic therapy is gaining ground with the rise of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. In this therapy an electrical current is passed through a wire coil and it creates a magnetic field that is very powerful. Energy from that magnetic field is then transferred to the brain by applying a coil device to the head. It passes through the skin and through the skull without any kind of pain. There is no need for surgery or sedation with the procedure, either. The TMS is applied to the area at the front of the brain because that is where the mood control centre is located. It affects the chemical activity and the brain functions, much like antidepressant medication but without any unnecessary side effects.

Those people who have experienced this treatment often do not see any improvement for the first week, but once they start into their second week of treatment they find that they see dramatic and marked improvement. For the twenty percent of depressed people who don't respond well to medication, the TMS therapy can be a life saver and give them back a sense of normalcy that they lost some time ago. It is much better and safer than the old standard of shock therapy which had major side effects and affected the whole brain. By only working with the prefrontal cortex the magnetic energy is targeted to only one area and there is no stress or damage to the rest of the brain. About twenty treatments are needed and one is given each day. Some people will need booster treatments and the therapy will not work for everyone, but the rate of improvement is better than for any type of medication out there currently.
