One of the worst beds in which I have ever slept was in a lodging house near Maidenhead in the UK. I had just finished university after graduating in Chemistry and was starting my first proper full time job. The company was very helpful towards new recruits and had found me temporary lodgings in the area until I could find something more permanent. The lodgings were quite bazaar. The landlord was a lover of birds and had a large number of various exotic bird species caged in a long conservatory. They made a dreadful noise and the whole place was encrusted with guano which was not an encouraging start.
I was shown my room which was tiny with a quite small bed. I had to share a bathroom. Still, I didn't anticipate staying there for long. The lodging included breakfast and an evening meal. The evening meal was dreadful. I seem to remember that it was bacon egg and chips. It is impossible to imagine how anyone could possibly fry an egg and end up with something that had both the texture and taste of rubber. Possibly these were not ordinary hens eggs but arrived via the conservatory. There were half a dozen or so other young people staying there and they all watched my expression as I ate the egg; they knew what it was like.
When I eventually went to bed I found that the bed was the most uncomfortable thing I have ever slept on. It must have been slept on for quite some time before by a really heavy person with a very different shape than me. The bed was moulded to a human form with lumps and bumps and hollows that were quite alien. There was no way that I could contort my body to fit into that hideous landscape of a bed. One thing I value above many is a good bed and a good night's sleep, especially when starting a new job. That bed was the final straw. Breakfast next morning? Bacon and eggs of course. The eggs tasted exactly the same as the night before. The next day I found somebody at work who needed a flat mate and I moved in that very evening.
