As the name suggests, an adjustable bed can be adjusted to a number of different positions. Depending on the bed manufacturer and the amount of money you are willing to pay for an adjustable bed, altering the sleeping position of the bed can be done either manually or electrically.

Adjustable beds are traditionally used by people with back problems either on the recommendation of a medical professional or because they feel more comfortable sleeping in an inclined position. Studies have shown that sleeping in an inclined position can be helpful with certain health problems.

While there is evidence that lying on a bed slighly inclined can be helpful for people with back injuries, it is worth noting that this is largely a matter of personal preference.

An adjustable bed that supports the knees and provides an inclined sleeping position should help to take pressure off the lower back and help relieve pain in the spine, back and neck. But it is not just people with back problems who could consider buying an adjustable bed. People who use their beds for work or watching TV may also like the idea of being able to recline or raise their bed according to their activities.

In recent years more young people have been buying adjustable beds to support their lifestyle rather than their backs.

A good exercise when considering purchasing an adjustable bed is to prop your mattress in a slightly inclined position and place pillows under your knees. If you find this a comfortable sleeping position for a couple of nights it is likely that you will also find an adjustable bed comfortable.

People who can benefit from sleeping on an adjustable bed are:

- People with degenerative spinal disorders who feel more comfortable sleeping in a reclining position than a flat horizontal position.
- People suffering the effects of osteoarthritis in the spine, who often wake up feeling sore in the morning due to a horizontal sleeping position.
- People who live in small apartments and who use their bed as a joint seating/sleeping zone.
- People suffering with spinal stenosis, who generally find that leaning forward slightly is more comfortable than lying horizontally.

It is important to remember that your personal preference is what will ultimately determine the type of bed you purchase. And if you don't feel as comfortable on an adjustable bed as you thought you would, you can always drop the bed into a horizontal position.
