Although asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral chain, the long-term consequences from its misuse can lead to unnatural and life-threatening medical complications like mesothelioma and asbestosis. Historically, the mineral, asbestos, was mined and used to produces garments impervious to fire. While it did make cleaning a snap, just chuck the dirty clothes in the fire, the clothes made with asbestos seemed to give their wearers mysterious illnesses. More recently, during the industrial revolution and the years following, asbestos began to gain common usage throughout the world as a building material and in insulation.
With widespread use, diseases like mesothelioma, previously unknown, become a common occurrence wherever asbestos was used heavily, especially when used in areas with poor ventilation. A morally-deprived asbestos industry attempted to cover up the hazardous effects asbestos has on health, and because of this, the industrialized world has been slow to regulate its use. Recently, the European Union and Australia has placed a ban on all materials manufactured using asbestos, but the United States has yet to follow suit but are soon expected to as many sufferers of the disease are now making asbestos compensation claims.
